Direct Admission

Often characterized as top scholars, motivated, and high achievers, direct-admits are actively interested in their future endeavors. They focus on success, not just academically, but also the bigger picture—being active on campus, taking on leadership roles, pursuing internships, and taking advantage of the wealth of opportunities available at the School of Informatics and Computing and IU.

Want to build a powerful network that you can maintain throughout your life?

Want to build alliances with faculty, colleagues and alumni through School of Informatics and Computing functions and programs?

These are only a few of the benefits you’ll discover as a direct-admit freshman.

Advantages of the Direct Admit Program

Most incoming freshmen at IU enroll in the University Division and are later certified into the School of Informatics and Computing. The Direct Admit Program lets you bypass this certification step. We find that students who connect directly with a major when they begin their studies at IU tend to have great success during and after college.

Who is eligible?

Students invited into the Direct Admit Program do not always fit the same profile. You may qualify for direct admission to the School of Informatics and Computing if you showcase competitive grades, SAT or ACT scores, class rank and demonstrated leadership skills, while having a strong interest in majoring in one of the School’s degree tracks of Informatics or Computer Science.

How to apply?

We coordinate with the Office of Admissions’ Selective Scholarship Application. All students who are admitted to Indiana University are considered for eligibility for selective scholarships. Students who meet initial eligibility criteria will receive the Selective Scholarship Application (SSA) in their admission packet, and need to complete and return the SSA by the specified date for further consideration. The Office of Admissions will then forward it on to the School of Informatics and Computing for review, if you qualify for our Direct Admit Program.

How can I ensure that I am considered for direct admission?

To be considered for direct admission, your completed application must be on file with the IU Bloomington Office of Admissions by February 1. Students can only be considered for direct admission after they have been admitted to IU. On your application for admission, you will need to list your intended major in the School of Informatics and Computing. Only students who express an interest in an area of study within the School of Informatics and COmputing can be considered for direct admission to the School.
