This is the syllabus for I692 Bioinformatics Capstones. It should viewed only as a tentative schedule of events directed by both me and you. I'm hoping to have the most fun in some time teaching this class; it should be a venue where you show what exactly your talents are, and what you can do with hard work. The course is spread over two semesters and will have monitoring of the progress of the projects. Since each project results in both an oral presentation and report, we will begin accumulating literature on the subject you will be working on.

ProjectThe capstone project is the culmination of a yearlong project under the guidance of one core bioinformatics faculty (Mehmet Dalkilic, Matt Hahh, Predrag Radivojac, Haixu Tang, or Yuzhen Ye) and solves a problem in bioinformatics--from genomics, proteomics, etc. The projects can be of several types: discovery, algorithm development and implementation, frameworks, surveys and so forth--the unifying theme is that that there must be a decidedly heavy bioinformatics--computational--componenent within the project. Each project will conclude with
Oral Presentation 20-25 minutes
Research Report (8-10) pages.
Most projects have restulted in publication in some of the top venues--and we hope to continue this tradition.
CHEATINGA nasty topic with even nastier consequences. I am linking you to the student's ethics handbook. There are few aberrations in life: crossword puzzles, self-check out at grocery stores, mowing lawns, and having to deal with students who find the lure of cheating worth the gamble of consequences. At best, you don't get caught and have not learned anything; at worst, you receive an academic F, much like the A in the Scarlett letter that will plague you for too long for you to understand. Under no circumstances will cheating be tolerated. The minimum will be an F for the assignment--the maximum removal from the class and loss of funding.
ATTENDANCE and HOMEWORKWhile there is no formal homework per se, student are required to give formal updates on the status of their projects and attend all capstone meetings. Students missing more than one meeting can be subject to dismal in the class. Students who do not have projects at the beginning of the semester will be assigned one of the capstone advisor and may involve other faculty across campus who are unaware of the program. The semester will also include help with Latex and power point presentations--and multiple rehearsals will be given.
