It has been a record year for connecting Informatics and Computer Science students with potential employers. The recent IT Career Fair—held September 16 at the Indiana Memorial Union—drew over 375 IU Bloomington students. At the fair, students had the opportunity to network with 72 employers and 87 alumni, all seeking to fill technology-related jobs and internships. The fair boasted a wide variety of employers for students to choose from, including national companies like Discover, John Deere, and Microsoft, as well as local companies such as Cook, Inc. and Information in Place.
Hosted by the School of Informatics, the IT Career Fair is a semi-annual event open to all Informatics, Computer Science, and IU Bloomington students interested in technology jobs and internships. Before this year’s event, the Informatics Career Services Office encouraged students to participate in its Resume Week activities. During Resume Week, students worked one-on-one with Career Services staff to prepare their resume for the fair and participate in interview preparation and practice exercises.
“We are very pleased with the desire employers have to engage with our students at the career fair and beyond,” said Jeremy Podany, Director of Career Services. “This event is a big contributor to the success of our students.”
According to the Informatics Career Services Office, the number one way that Informatics students found a job last year was through IT Career Fairs. Networking came in fourth, above applying for a job via a company Web site or through Internet job boards. The School has an impressive hiring rate for undergraduate students, with 70% employed or accepted to a graduate program by graduation. Informatics and Computer Science students can also look forward to competitive salaries right out of college. In 2007-08, Informatics students earned an average of $52,825 and Computer Science students $62,650. A wider range of statistics is available on the Informatics Career Services Web site.
