Schedule:
9:00am - noon Introduction & Presentations
A short introduction to the workshop from organizers.
Presentations by the participants (10-15 minutes per presentation including Q&A).
noon - 1:30pm Lunch (We will go in a group for lunch for all those interested in so doing.)
1:30pm - 3:30pm Designing Interaction Design Studios
The goal of this exercise is more to create lively discourse about the nature of design studio culture in HCI, than it is to create specific actionable designs.
We will break into 4-5 groups and ask each group to meet to collaboratively design the ideal HCI and design design studio environment.
Each group will be provided with large post-it poster paper pads and markers.
Groups will be encouraged to inventory the kinds of materials that would appear in such a studio space and to envision the kinds of activities that such spaces would afford.
Groups may choose to emphasize education or research or practical orientations for the environments.
Groups will be encouraged to account for how the physical and virtual may be combined in the designs.
3:30pm - 3:45pm Break
3:45pm - 5:00pm Design Presentations & Aggregation of Insights
Each group will elect a representative who will demonstrate the group's design for the Design Studio to the entire assembly. Candid critique by the participants will be encouraged by the organizers.
One of the organizers will serve as a moderator who will try to aggregate insights from the participants based on asking specific questions as described in the extended abstract that are targeted at prompting reflection about the designs. These insights will be recorded, transcribed, and shared after the event.
One of the organizers will moderate a discusssion about how to collaborate further on strategies to bring studio culture to HCI design.
We will talk about the posibility for publishing an edited volume.
