Understanding Users in Context
The development of new technology affects the innovation of new products such as mobile, wireless products, invisible computing, and networked systems. Taking into account the context in which such products are used is critical to the success of designing those products. My research primarily addresses this issue, and I have developed new methods that lead to the integration of multiple aspects of human environments to describe effectively the relationship between human contexts and products. These methods include scenario generation mechanisms and prototyping specification mechanisms.New Paradigms of Interaction Design for New Technologies
While computing technologies have become essential elements of our activities and environments, the design of interactive products that embed such technologies have become more complicated. The characteristics of digital have made a design space too open. When we manipulate physical materials for design, constraints are clearly tangible so that we can easily manipulate the constraints to design what we desire. But for digital products which are what interactive products are categorized into, such strict constraints are not naturally given. This issue is what made the design of interactive products difficult, and it is what motivated this theme of my research--exploring new paradigms of interaction design. I have contributed and will continue to contribute to this theme through several research directions: 1) supporting the design of the aesthetics of interaction, 2) enhancing creativity in interaction design, and 3) exploring the nature of prototyping for design.Design Information Management for Multidisciplinary Design Environments
In today's team-driven design world, the management and integration of information is more critical to success than ever. For example, information from the marketing department, engineering department, and design department must be shared and integrated to develop a product. This process affects the efficiency of the design process as well as the quality of the new product. I have developed an information platform that can archive and manage information created during the design process, allowing teams from different departments to share and use these materials. This line of research is continued to be conducted to support the collaboration and interaction of multidisciplinary team members in design activities. - Publication list
