Informatics and Computing students still in demand

A record 464 students attended the School of Informatics and Computing’s fall IT Career Fair on September 15 at the Indiana Memorial Union. They were met by 50 employer organizations, among them national companies Microsoft, Target, Orbitz and the National Security Agency; as well as Indiana-based firms Cummins, Roche, and ExactTarget. The recruiting organizations brought 45 IU alumni, including 15 who were alums of the School of Informatics and Computing.

“This event is the #1 way our students have found jobs or internships over the last three years, so we were very pleased with the high employer attendance in this down economy,” said Jeremy Podany, director of career services for the School. “It definitely confirms what we keep hearing about the strength of the technology job market. We are thrilled with the volume of connections that were made for informatics and computing students at the fair, which bodes well for those students’ job prospects.”

One alum who returned for the career fair was Shannon Hutcheson, a 2007 Informatics graduate from Terre Haute, who works as a systems engineer for the Target Corporation in Minneapolis. “It’s always great to be back at IU and fun to see students who are in the same place I was just a few years ago,” said Shannon.

The employers scheduled follow-up interviews with students that will take place over the coming weeks. Thirty companies will interview at the School’s Career Services office between now and November 1.
