Class Action: Faculty feted for teaching talents

Eight Indiana University faculty members will be recognized by the School of Informatics for their commitment to excellence in teaching and service on the eve of spring 2006 commencement.

The award categories and recipients include:
2006 IU Trustees Teaching Award Geoffrey Brown, associate professor of computer science; Kalpana Shankar, assistant professor of informatics; and Jeffrey Bardzell, assistant professor of informatics.

Computer Science Departmental Teaching Award Suzanne Menzel, senior lecturer in computer science.

Informatics Faculty Teaching Excellence Award Shared by Luis Rocha, associate professor of informatics; and Santiago Schnell, assistant professor of informatics.

Hermes Award This award is based on service that advances the mission of the School. This year’s recipients are Dennis Gannon, professor of computer science; and IU Distinguished Professor Richard Shiffrin, IU Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences. Both Gannon and Shiffrin are being recognized for their leadership roles in chairing two key committees that led to the establishment of the School in 2000.

“Teaching is a calling, but excellent teaching is a true art,” says Informatics Dean J. Michael Dunn. “This year’s honorees certainly have distinguished themselves among their students and peers and they join an elite group of past recipients.”

The Bloomington campus faculty members will receive their awards at a commencement dinner and awards ceremony honoring the 2006 graduates of the IU School of Informatics.
