“Spirit of Philanthropy”

Every spring for 13 years, IUPUI has held the Spirit of Philanthropy Luncheon. At this special campus-wide event, IUPUI honored those individuals, corporations, and foundations who contributed to IU programs through their generous gifts and voluntary services. In honoring the recipients, the campus and communities are reminded of the importance of philanthropy and voluntarism to our university, community, and civic life.

This year’s event was held on Thursday, April 26, 2001 at the Indiana Convention Center. The keynote speaker for the luncheon was Dr. Myles Brand, president of Indiana University.

Each academic or service unit at IUPUI nominated one or two honorees selected from external constituencies. The School of Informatics honored Roy Dunbar and Scott Jones, both members of the School of Informatics Dean’s Council.

Roy Dunbar

Roy Dunbar is vice president and chief information officer for Eli Lilly and Company. Mr. Dunbar has a pharmacy degree from Manchester University, U.K., and a M.B.A. from Manchester Business School. He is a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain and on the Working Council for the CIO Corporate Executive Board, as well as serving on the IU School of Informatics Dean’s Council. Mr. Dunbar’s efforts on behalf of Informatics have been invaluable, including his on-going work to form partnerships between Lilly and the School of Informatics in the areas of research and teaching. Among other public presentations on behalf of the school, Mr. Dunbar appeared as spokesperson on an informational video about Informatics. He is honored for his support and his leadership in exploring and demonstrating the possibilities of corporate/university partnerships.

Scott Jones

Scott Jones, on his own and through the companies he built, has made major contributions to technology worldwide, as well as in Indiana. His first company Boston Technology, Inc. was built on his patented voice mail technology. He now leads Escient Technologies, LLC, of Carmel, Indiana, a leader in developing products that merge Internet power with home entertainment products. Mr. Jones is an Indiana University graduate from the Department of Computer Science and currently a member of the IU School of Informatics Dean’s Council. He is being honored for his support and advocacy of the new School of Informatics. He also helped the School by teaching one of its first courses, “Technology and Business: Making the Marriage Work”. His contributions have significantly raised the awareness of and the enthusiasm for the School of Informatics across the state
