Biography
Prof. Dr. Johann Gasteiger of the Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg has indicated his willingness to be considered for appointment as an adjunct professor in Informatics. Johann Gasteiger is one of the two most recognized people in the world in the field of cheminformatics. He has received numerous awards for his many contributions. These include:
- American Chemical Society Division of Chemical Informatics Herman Skolnik Award for Outstanding Contributions in Chemical Information Science
- American Chemical Society Award for Computers in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Research
- Gmelin-Beilstein Medal of the German Chemical Society for Achievements in Computer Chemistry
A measure of the influence of Johann Gasteiger can be gained from the fact that one of his former students played a key role in the design of the PubChem database produced by the National Institutes of Health. Many others occupy important positions in the pharmaceutical industry.
Prof. Dr. Gasteiger will retire soon from his academic position in Germany, and he has indicated a desire to become affiliated with IU and perhaps teach a course in cheminformatics next year. This has the strongest unanimous support of the cheminformatics faculty and the Coordinator of the Life Sciences Group. In a recent communication, Geoffrey Fox stated, “This has my strongest support—Johann was very impressive at the NIH meeting which brought all the current Cheminformatics centers together.” Therefore, I request that consideration of Prof. Dr. Johann Gasteiger as an adjunct professor of Informatics be placed before the faculty at the earliest possible time.
