Research Statement
Once a member of the Speech and Natural Language Group at BBN, Raphael’s research now focuses on the analysis, recognition, and interpretation of music using probabilistic graphical models. Specific areas of application include musical accompaniment systems, music audio recognition, algorithmic musical analysis, and audio processing.
After winning the San Francisco Young Artist Competition at 17, Raphael studied the oboe with Ray Still. He played principal oboe in the Santa Cruz Symphony, soloing with that orchestra twice, and has held a fellowship to Tanglewood.
