Research Statement
My research focuses on the development of new database access and data mining techniques in support of data visualization activities. I am particularly interested in exploring ways in which visualizations can be manipulated in the same fashion as the data that generates the visualizations. Creating such techniques will enhance a user’s ability to explore the visual space, thereby improving the knowledge discovery process. This work requires a detailed examination of mapping constructs from data to visualization.
In addition to the long term goals for my research, there are a variety of specific projects that I am actively pursuing. One of these projects involves the use of mobile tablet PC’s as annotation clients for large-scale visualizations. We are developing a framework for mobile clients to remotely view visualization, and then collect their observations on the tablet PC. This collaborative system will support the collection and dissemination of multiple user's observations — all within the context of visualized data.
Projects
Information Provenance
This project develops models and theories for tracking of user interactions with their data. The project is related to one of the current issues the visualization research community is that of "Visual Analytics", which seeks to develop methods for visualization, collaboration, sense-making, and sharing of discoveries.
Mobile Visualization of Data
This project couples the generation of visualizations with mobile devices that enable groups of users to collaborate. We are developing a framework for group annotation of visualizations using new interaction mechanisms with, in particular, tablet PC’s.
Undergraduate Capstones
Every Informatics undergraduate student must complete a capstone project. I am responsible for overseeing many of these projects in the I450/I451 Designing and Developing an Information System course.
