Santiago Schnell

Assistant Professor of Informatics
  • Adjunct Assistant Professor of Biology
  • Adjunct Assistant Professor of Physics
  • Associate Director of the Biocomplexity Institute

Biology deals with phenomena that are intrinsically more complex and more difficult to investigate than those normally studied in other natural sciences. In recent years, systems biology has led to important insights into many fundamental questions using mathematical and computational modelling as a research tool.

Systems biology is a multidisciplinary approach to study biological phenomena by integrating research techniques and methodologies from biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, mathematics and computer science. Prof. Schnell is interested in applying systems biology techniques to study complex biochemical pathways and networks, and the early stages of development of the embryo.

Prof. Schnell is the head of the Systems Biology laboratory and faculty of the Complex System group at Indiana University School of Informatics. He is member of the editorial board of Computational Biology and Chemistry and of the IET Proceedings Systems Biology.

Biography

Prof. Schnell received his License in Biology with special emphasis on biochemistry and molecular biology (degree equivalent to a M. Sc.) and D. Phil. in Applied Mathematics from Universidad Simón Bolívar (Venezuela) and University of Oxford (United Kingdom), respectively. He has just left a position in the Centre for Mathematical Biology at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Oxford. He held the posts of Ordinary Research Fellow of the Wellcome Trust, London (2002-2004) and a Junior Research Fellow of Christ Church, Oxford (2001-2004).

He was the José Gregorio Hernández Research Fellow of the Venezuelan Academy of Medicine (1998-2001), the Lord Miles Senior Scholar in Science of Pembroke College, Oxford (1999-2001) and Lecturer in Applied Mathematics for Pembroke (2000-2001) and Brasenose College, Oxford (2001).

He also is a founding member of the Bioethical Committee of the Venezuelan National Council of Scientific and Technological Research.
