While I have spent a large portion of my research career in a research institute setting (the Los Alamos National Laboratory), my teaching record includes developing several new courses at the State University of New York at Binghamton, Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, and Indiana University. I am passionate about interdisciplinary science and education, training students in various academic programs including the NSF-NRT Interdisciplinary Training Program in Complex Networks and Systems which I direct at Indiana University. My teaching philosophy emphasizes group work mediated by informatics technology with the goal of getting students involved in the excitement of the subject matter and encouraging them to take intellectual ownership of it. I first applied these ideals in 1995 at SUNY with online publishing of lecture notes and interactive web assignments. At IU I have updated these ideas making extensive use of blogs and newer interactive group assignments, as seen in the course pages below. After developing the complex systems training program and syllabi for several courses, I have received the Indiana University, School of Informatics & Computing, Trustees Award for Teaching Excellence in 2006 and 2015. I have also helped develop the curricula of the PhD program on Computational Biology at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência in Portugal.
